IPL 2026 Auction: CSK Miss Out on Cameron Green as KKR Bag Him for ₹25.20 Crore
R Ashwin on CSK's strategy at the IPL auction: Former Indian spin all-rounder R Ashwin has questioned Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) strategy in the IPL 2026 auction. He said that CSK missed a major opportunity to acquire Cameron Green.
Chennai Super Kings started moving ahead in a different pattern as all other teams regarding the IPL 2026 auction. They had invested a significant amount of money in some young players, such as Kartik Sharma and Prashanth Veer, but could not get their target player, Cameron Green.
In a statement regarding Chris Green, former Indian all-rounder R Ashwin stated that Chennai Super Kings missed a large opportunity because Kolkata got Chris Green, their target all-rounder, at a record sale price of 25.20 crores ($2.5 billion), making him the most costly foreign player to buy yet.
Green was one of the highly sought names in the IPL 2026 auction. He was tipped to be very close to KKR and CSK since they had bigger budgets. Although both franchises tried their best to acquire the young all-rounder, CSK backed off when the bidding exceeded ₹25 crore (approximately $2.5 billion).
Ashwin believes that KKR could have positioned their bid differently to put more pressure on CSK. He commented on his YouTube channel that if KKR had been a little more patient, like some other franchises, Punjab Kings took time to bid. If Kolkata had bid the same, I think CSK would have let Green go long ago. KKR felt Chennai bid for Green because they had to.

Despite CSK's inability to acquire Green, Ashwin emphasized Green's value as a player. He said, "I thought Green would have been a great player for CSK, but they missed an opportunity. Regardless, it's not about the price; Green is a generational talent, and this is a fantastic deal for KKR."
Cameron Green is set to join his third Indian Premier League franchise. He previously played for the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He missed last season's auction due to a long-term injury during the off-season.
