First proposal related to Myanmar presented in UNSC: Demand to release Aung San Suu Kyi

For the first time in 74 years, a resolution regarding Myanmar was presented in the UN Security Council (UNSC). In this, there was a demand to stop the violence with immediate effect and to release all political prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi. Of the 15 countries in the UNSC, 12 voted in favour of the resolution. Whereas India, China and Russia did not participate in the voting. This proposal was introduced by Britain.

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said the situation in Myanmar is complicated. For this, the path of diplomacy has to be adopted. At the same time, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun said that there is no way to fix this problem completely.

In Myanmar, in February 2021, a military coup ousted the democratically elected government from power. A large number of officials and leaders were jailed, including Myanmar's top leader Aung San Suu Kyi and former Prime Minister Win Myint. The people of Myanmar protested against it in large numbers. Aung Sun received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
