The Income Tax Department raided the premises of a politician and some other people in West Bengal. During this, about 11 crore rupees were recovered. The action was taken at about two dozen places in Kolkata and Murshidabad on Wednesday. It mostly consisted of beedi-making factories and other businesses.
As per information received by the department, these businesses were involved in cash transactions beyond the record books. Due to this, he committed tax evasion.
According to the report of Hindustan Times, the action of the Income Tax Department started on Wednesday morning. During the raid, around 11 crore cash was seized from the house and factory of former minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Zakir Hussain. This action continued till 3:30 am on Thursday. Raids were also conducted at the former minister's Murshidabad residence, bidi factory and oil mills.
In Murshidabad itself, about 5.5 crores were seized from two more beedi factories. In this way, a total of Rs 16 crore cash was seized.
Hussain is the TMC MLA from Jangipur in the Murshidabad district. He has been a former junior labour minister in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government. An official said that about 1 crore was seized from Hussain's house, while about 10 crores was seized from his rice flour mill.
However, Hussain, who owns a bidi factory and several mills, claims that he has the documents. This money was to be given to the labourers working in their factories and mills.
Zakir said 7,000 labourers work. He had to pay. The money confiscated from my house and mills was to be given to the workers and peasants. We showed them the documents but they did not pay attention. We sometimes need to keep cash at home for security reasons. The law will take its course. I pay taxes regularly. We have also cooperated with the authorities.
