Google Makes AI Video Creation Free with Vids Update, Veo 3.1 Now for Everyone
Google has released new updates to its AI-powered video creation platform, Google Vids. The company announced that anyone can now create Veo 3.1-powered AI videos for free.
However, Google Vids, the artificial intelligence (AI) video generator by the tech giant, has received a major upgrade. Whereas in August 2025, Google made the platform accessible to all its users, AI video generation from prompt text could only be done using the platform by paying customers. This Thursday, however, Google revealed that it would be possible to generate AI videos powered by Veo 3.1 using the platform freely.
As per a blog post by Google, several improvements have been made on the platform following the upgrade. The biggest announcement was that video creation using the Veo 3.1 AI model is now free for everyone. With this, anyone with a personal Google account can create AI videos up to eight seconds long using text prompts or image input. Currently, users with free accounts can only create 10 videos per month.
Another major new feature is custom soundtracks. Users can now add AI-generated soundtracks to their clips or entire videos based on the Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models. The company says this will allow users to create tracks ranging from 30 seconds to three minutes. However, this feature is currently only available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.

In addition, the company is also adding AI avatars to the platform. When creating anchor-based clips or videos, paid subscription users can now use Veo 3.1 to create an AI avatar that can be customized and whose face and voice remain consistent. This means that this avatar can be used not only across multiple clips but also across different projects, without worrying about consistency.
These AI avatars are also highly controllable. Users can place them in specific scenes and have them interact with uploaded content. The avatar's appearance can also be customized. Google says that users can customize the avatar's appearance, change clothing, and even change the background.
Finally, the company is also making it easier to create and share video projects on Google Vids. With a new screen recorder Chrome extension, users can now record their screen or themselves from anywhere on the web. This now makes the entire video creation process a single click away.
In addition, users can now publish their finished videos directly to YouTube. This new export process eliminates the additional steps that previously involved rendering the video, downloading it, and then uploading it to the video streaming platform. Furthermore, all exports will be private by default, allowing users to preview them before sharing them publicly.
