Essar Group co-founder Shashi Ruia died after a prolonged illness. He was 80 years old. Ruia, who founded the metals to-technology company Essar, and his brother Ravi, died on November 25 at around 11.55 pm in Mumbai, family sources said.

He returned from the US about a month ago, where he was undergoing treatment. His body will be kept at Ruia House from 1 pm to 3 pm on Tuesday. The funeral procession will leave Ruia House for the Hindu Worli crematorium at 4 pm.

A first-generation entrepreneur, industrialist Shashi started his career in 1965 under the guidance of his father Nand Kishore Ruia.

He and his brother Ravi laid the foundation of Essar in 1969 by building an outer breakwater at Chennai Port. The group expanded into various sectors: steel, oil refining, exploration and production, telecom, power and construction.

In his family, he has his wife Manju, and two sons Prashant and Anshuman.

Condoling the death of Ruia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was a colossus in the industry. He said his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed India's business landscape. He described his demise as extremely sad.

"He also set high benchmarks for innovation and growth. He was always full of ideas and discussed how we can improve our country," Modi said on X.
