The government informed the Lok Sabha that, in 2024, citizens suffered a loss of more than Rs 22,845.73 crore due to cybercrimes, which is 206% more than the previous year. According to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, 3637288 cases of cyber fraud were registered. An amount of more than Rs 5489 crore was saved from the system introduced to prevent financial fraud.

Cybercriminals caused a loss of 22 thousand crores in 2024, the government told shocking figures in Parliament

The government informed the Lok Sabha that citizens suffered a loss of more than Rs 22,845.73 crore to cybercriminals in 2024, representing a shocking 206 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, in response to a written question on Tuesday, said that as per the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS), the "total amount of loss suffered by citizens due to cyber fraud" was Rs 22,845.73 crore in 2024 as against Rs 7,465.18 crore in the previous year.

Kumar said that 36,37,288 cases of financial fraud committed by cybercriminals were registered on NCRP and CFCFRMS in 2024, as against 24,42,978 in the previous year. As per the data shared by the minister, 10,29,026 cyber crimes were registered on NCRP in 2022, showing an increase of 127.44 per cent over the previous year. In 2023, 15,96,493 cases were registered, an increase of 55.15 per cent and in 2024, 22,68,346 cases were registered, showing an increase of 42.08 per cent.
