Cauvery Water Dispute: SC to set up bench on Cauvery water dispute, legal battle to begin over decades-old dispute

The Supreme Court on Monday said it would set up a bench to hear the decades-old dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over sharing of Cauvery River water.

The matter was mentioned for urgent hearing by advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Tamil Nadu, before a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra.

Rohatgi said Tamil Nadu has filed an application seeking the release of water for the month of August, which has been ordered by the Cauvery Water Management Authority.

Karnataka-Tamil Nadu ongoing dispute
Rohatgi said a bench would have to be constituted to hear the matter. The Chief Justice said I will constitute a bench.

In the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee meeting, it was unanimously decided that 15,000 cusecs of water per day would be released from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. On August 11, Tamil Nadu said Karnataka was ready to release only 8,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water every day.
