No proposal to ban the import of more electronic products, Commerce Secretary said - monitoring is being done

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Monday that there is no proposal to ban the import of more electronic products. The government recently announced a ban on the import of many electronic products including laptops, and personal computers from November 1.

Its objective is to reduce imports from countries like China and promote domestic manufacturing. The Commerce Secretary said that the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is being run to promote electronics and mobile manufacturing. He said that we are monitoring our imports.

Also seeing that there is no unnecessary dependence on any particular country. We want to diversify both our exports and imports. We do not want to depend on very few sources of imports.

The Commerce Secretary said that the situation is being assessed in consultation with various Ministries. We are keeping an eye on the trends, but nothing has come to the fore so far. He said that the decision to ban the import of other electronic products would be taken after consultation with the ministries. Not going to take any such step now.
