Driverless Metro: Kolkata Metro will start driverless technology on two more routes, will cost Rs 800 crore

Kolkata Metro is installing a state-of-the-art signaling system costing Rs 800 crore to run driverless trains on two additional routes. An official gave this information on Thursday. This advanced signaling system, used in countries such as Spain and Denmark, allows trains to run without a motorman. Who are called drivers in the metro language.

The entire Kolkata Metro network will have the CBTC system's ATO (Automatic Train Operations) mode installed within the next five years. The motorman's only responsibilities when the train is in ATO mode are to shut the doors and push the button to start it.

The Kawi Subhash-Baman Bandar and Joka-Esplanade metro corridors are undergoing the installation of the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system. Additionally, officials emphasized that the East-West Metro corridor already uses the cutting-edge system.
