Bullet Train: Why is the Bullet Train project getting delayed, Railway Minister explained the reason

One of India's most ambitious projects, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor project, commonly known as the Bullet Train project, is likely to get delayed further. Giving the latest update about the project, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told the Rajya Sabha on Friday that the project is getting delayed due to challenges in land acquisition.
He said that despite the challenges of land acquisition, the project has registered progress in its construction phase. According to the 2015 Joint Feasibility Study report, the estimated cost of the project was Rs 1,08,000 crore and it was to be completed in eight years. There have been significant delays in the project, according to reports.
It may be known that out of about 1389.5 hectares of land required for this project, about 1381.9 hectares of land has been acquired so far. Maharashtra is facing the most difficulty in acquiring land, which is having a major impact on the project. All civil contracts for the MAHSR project have been awarded and the project has been divided into 28 contract packages, out of which 23 packages have already been awarded.
He further added that when the project will be completed and how much it will cost can be ascertained only after the land acquisition process is completed and all the contracts are finalized. The Railway Minister said that delay in land acquisition has been a major stumbling block and resolving these issues remains a priority for the officials involved in the project.
