He was walking along the Pathankot-Jalandhar National Highway near his village, Beas Pind, in Jalandhar when a speeding car hit him. Some young people took him to the hospital, where he passed away during treatment in the evening. Fauja Singh was known as 'Turban Tornado.' His death has sparked a wave of mourning in the sports community.
Fauja Singh moved to England after his wife Gian Kaur died in 1992, settling in East London with his son Kuldeep. In 1994, he began running to cope with the grief of his son's death and became the oldest marathon runner. He completed his first marathon at age 90. In 2004, he finished the London Marathon at age 93. In 2011, at age 100, he finished the Toronto Marathon and set a record in the 100-plus category.
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed grief over his passing. He wrote on Twitter, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of Sardar Fauja Singh ji, a great marathon runner and a symbol of perseverance. At the age of 114, he joined me in the 'Nasha Mukt - Rangla Punjab' march with unparalleled enthusiasm. His legacy will remain an inspiration for a drug-free Punjab."
