Millions of people have lost their lives worldwide due to a deadly disease, Tuberculosis (TB). India has also been troubled by this serious health risk. As per the statistics, a total of 1.6 million (16 lakh) people died from TB in the year 2021. TB disease is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide. India had set a aims to eliminate TB by 2025 and is constantly working towards it. The World Health Organisation has praised India for its efforts to prevent tuberculosis, and a comparison of statistics from recent years can help understand the impact of these efforts.

TB is an infectious disease caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Primarily it spreads by airborne droplets. When persons with TB disease cough or sneeze, droplets may be released into the air, presenting an infectious risk to others around.

The infection of TB occurs when the germs of TB develop in the lungs. Most people do not show symptoms in the case of primary or initial infection. Some develop a flu-like problem that causes mild fever, fatigue, and cough. Mucus with cough, pain while breathing or coughing, fever chills, and night sweating are seen in the case of an increasing infection.
