Smoke came out of BEST's electric bus in Mumbai, all passengers evacuated safely
Maharashtra: A BEST electric bus caught fire in Mumbai's Byculla area on Tuesday afternoon. However, all the passengers were evacuated safely. The bus was manufactured by Olectra.
Smoke started coming out from the overhead battery of a leased electric bus of 'BEST' operated by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. After this, the passengers were disembarked in the Byculla area and the bus was evacuated. An official gave this information on Tuesday.
He said all the passengers were safe. The bus was on route number 126 and was proceeding towards Jajamata Udyan. The incident occurred on Babasaheb Ambedkar Road around 1.15 pm today. A source said the bus might have collided with the upper part of an under-construction bridge. But the exact reason for the smoke is not known yet.
The official said the bus was from Olectra. A major bus accident occurred in Kurla earlier this month. That, too, was manufactured by the same company. Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) hires most of its e-buses from private contractors on wet leases.
Fire brigade officials said that a fire engine was rushed to the spot after a phone call was received. Further details were awaited. Earlier on Monday, the BEST bus of Dharavi depot plying on route number 303 between Bandra station (east) and Mulund (east) caught fire. The incident happened at the junction of the Gandhinagar in the Ghatkopar area.
