OpenAI will open its first office in India this year, founder Sam Altman will come next month

OpenAI announced on Friday that it will open its first office in New Delhi later this year. Simultaneously, OpenAI founder Sam Altman will visit India next month. Altman wrote on X that AI adoption in India has been incredible. The company is eager to invest more in the country.

Altman's post coincided with the company's announcement of opening an office. India is the second-largest and one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT after the US, reflecting the rapid rise in popularity of its AI tools in the region.

In a statement on Friday about its India expansion, OpenAI said it has officially established a unit in India and started hiring a dedicated local team. Altman stated, "We are opening our first office in India later this year! And I look forward to coming to India next month."

On X, Altman reiterated that the adoption of AI in India has been impressive. The number of ChatGPT users has quadrupled in the past year. Given this growth, the company is excited to increase its investment in India.

According to OpenAI, opening an office in India is a key step toward supporting the IndiaAI mission and creating AI 'for India and with India' in collaboration with the government. The move is also intended to improve service delivery to users. Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav welcomed the initiative, saying it will further boost digital and AI innovation in India.

OpenAI plans to establish a local team in India that will closely collaborate with the government, businesses, developers, and universities. Additionally, new features and tools designed for India will be developed, focusing on affordability and accessibility. The company also intends to host its first education summit and developer day in India soon and will generate new job opportunities.
