Google has launched Emergency Location Service (ELS) for Android smartphones in India. This service allows users to contact and share their location with police, health, and fire departments in an emergency. This feature was first launched in Uttar Pradesh and is available on all versions of Android 6 and above.
Google has launched Emergency Location Service (ELS) for Android smartphones in India. The service enables the user to call or message the police, health, or fire department in case of an emergency. Moreover, the location of the user is going to be shared with the concerned authority by ELS as well. The service was introduced initially in the Uttar Pradesh region of India. The above service is accessible on all Android 6 or above smartphones. However, the concerned state authority has to allow the ELS service on its system as well.
Google has rolled out the ELS feature for Android mobile devices. ELS stands for Emergency Locator System or Service. It is a general emergency feature provided by Google for Android mobile devices that allows users to connect with emergency responders like police officers, medical professionals, and fire brigade officers. According to Google, ELS uses Android phone GPS/Wi-Fi/Cell capabilities to share the location information with emergency responders.
The ELS service requires local wireless and emergency infrastructure to support it. Uttar Pradesh is the first state in India to fully implement this service. The UP Police have partnered with Pert Telecom Solutions for this purpose. ELS support has been integrated with the emergency number 112. This is a free service. By dialing 112, emergency services will receive the user's location from an Android phone.

Google stated that the ELS feature is available for all versions of Android 6.0 and later. The company claims that the ELS service has received 20 million calls and messages to date. ELS is powered by Google's machine learning-based Android Fused Location Provider. Google says this feature is only for emergency service providers. ELS and Google do not collect any data. They only share essential data with the appropriate authorities.
Google recently launched the Emergency Live Video feature for Android devices. This feature allows users to share their camera feed while making calls or SMS during an emergency. However, the emergency service provider will have to request the video from the user. Once the responder requests the video, the user will receive a prompt on the screen. A single tap can provide a visual feed.
