In the run-up to the Union Budget 2026-27, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met top economists in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the upcoming budget. Those who attended the meeting include Sajid Chinoy, Neelkanth Mishra, Dharmakirti Joshi, Ridham Desai, Sonal Verma, and Indira Rajaraman.
"Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the first pre-budget consultation with leading economists in New Delhi regarding the upcoming Union Budget 2026-27," the Finance Ministry said in a social media post.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) of the Ministry of Finance and the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, along with senior DEA officials. She will present the budget against the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainties and the heavy 50 percent tariff imposed by the US on goods imported from India.
The budget for the next fiscal year will focus on issues such as boosting demand, creating jobs, and driving the economy to a sustained growth rate of over 8 percent. The government estimates that the Indian economy will grow between 6.3-6.8 percent during the current fiscal year.
