Chanu won the silver medal in the Weightlifting World Championship: left behind the Olympic champion; lifted 200 kg
India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu missed out on gold at the World Weightlifting Championships due to a wrist injury. Chanu could not give her best in the World Weightlifting Championship being held in Colombia. Chanu finished second in the 49 kg weight category by lifting 200 kg. She could only lift 87 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk. Jiang Huihua of China won gold by lifting 206 kg. Jiang lifted 83 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk. Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Hou Zhihua won the bronze medal with a lift of 198 kg (89 kg+109 kg).
After winning gold in the Commonwealth Games, Mirabai Chanu participated in a major tournament for the first time. Chanu's snatch session was very bad. He lifted 84 kg in his first chance. The 87 kilowatts raised in the second chance were considered unsuccessful. However, it was not challenged by India. The judges believed that his hand was shaky while lifting 87 kg in the second chance. In such a situation, Meera lifted only 87 kg weight instead of 90 kg weight in the third chance. In clean and jerk, he lifted 111 kg in his first chance. But it was not considered correct. A challenge was made by India, but the decision was upheld. He lifted 111 in the second chance and 113 in the third. He got the silver medal in the snatch category, while gold in clean and jerk. In the World Championships, medals are given separately for both the events as well as overall, whereas in the Olympics, only overall medals are given.
Chanu has won the gold medal in the World Weightlifting Championship in 2017. After Chanu won the silver medal, coach Vijay Sharma said that we are not too worried about this competition. Our focus is on his injury. There is still time in the upcoming tournament. In such a situation, Chanu will slowly increase weight while recovering from the injury. Chanu got hurt during practice.
Mirabai's road to the Paris Olympics has become easier. By participating in this tournament, its point will be added to the qualification for the Paris Olympics. Under the rules of the Paris Olympic qualification, it is necessary to participate in three events along with the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup.
