According to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Canada is currently negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with India. The aim is to double trade between the two countries by 2030. Currently, trade between the two countries stands at $7.8 billion. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is in India for a four-day visit.
Carney further added that this is a huge opportunity for both countries and that it can be even bigger. We should set our sights higher and think more strategically about our partnership. That's why, immediately after my election last year, our government sought to renew our relationship with India.
Carney said, "I invited Prime Minister Modi to the G7 Summit held in Canada. When he arrived a few weeks later, we agreed to renew cooperation in security, energy, and technology. A few months later, at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Modi and I launched a historic partnership with Australia on critical minerals and technology." He further stated that during this visit, Canada is focusing on key areas where it can work together to create greater sovereignty, greater choice, and greater prosperity for its people.

Carney said, "We can also become strategic partners in minerals and metals critical to India's manufacturing, clean technology, and nuclear industries. On the other hand, India can help us double our grid with clean energy by 2040." Carney stressed that India's leadership in AI and the digital economy aligns well with Canada's mission to develop and commercialize those technologies, as well as quantum technologies, to further deepen its defense innovation.
