Anil Kumble angry over Shubman Gill's flop performance, said- Cheteshwar Pujara does not get so many opportunities

Anil Kumble on India vs. England, Shubman Gill: Anil Kumble feels that Shubman Gill, who was having form issues, was given more security and a stable position in the team than Cheteshwar Pujara. Despite scoring 128 runs in the first innings of the Test match against Australia in March of last year, Gill has not reached a half-century in the last eleven innings.

Anil Kumble angry over Shubman Gill's flop performance, said- Cheteshwar Pujara does not get so many opportunities

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble commented on Shubman Gill's ongoing failure in Test cricket, stating that even the seasoned batsman Cheteshwar Pujara likely did not receive the same opportunities as the right-handed batsman. Shubman Gill's journey has become a little more challenging after he had a fantastic start to his Test career and finished third.

Tom Hartley, a rookie, dismissed Shubman Gill for just 23 runs in the first innings in Hyderabad. Against Hartley in the second innings, Gill was out for zero without opening the account, with India needing to score 231 runs. Gill, 24, has not amassed a half-century in his previous 11 innings of Test cricket. In March of last year, he amassed 128 runs in the first innings of a match against Australia. Since then his highest score has been 36 runs.

Gill has scored 173 runs in his last 11 Test innings at an average of 17.30. This is in stark contrast to him scoring 1000 plus runs in ODIs and becoming the top run-scorer in IPL 2023 last year. Anil Kumble told 'Jio Cinema', "The security that Gill has got, even Cheteshwar Pujara did not get it even though Pujara has played more than 100 Tests. I talk about Pujara again and again because he has been there for some time. Earlier he used to bat at number three. Pujara played the World Test Championship final and since then Shubman Gill has been batting at number three."

Kumble, who was India's head coach when they defeated England 4-0 in the 2016 home series. He believes that head coach Rahul Dravid is the best person to help Gill out of his troubles in Tests. Kumble said, "He needs to be a lot more independent. He needs to score runs. He has to make his plan to deal with the spin. It is good on good surfaces, where the ball is coming well. But "When the ball is spinning, when it's slow, you need to use your hands and have control and check your shots."
