3. Despite Kohli-Gaikwad Tons, India Fall Short as SA Clinch 4-Wicket Victory

The second match of the three-match ODI series was played in Raipur between India and South Africa, and the Proteas won the match to level the three-match ODI series 1-1. Team India had won the first match by 17 runs. In the second ODI, India, after being asked to bat first, made 358 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 50 overs. Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad scored centuries. Chasing the target of 359 runs, South Africa won the match by 4 wickets with 4 balls to spare.
Earlier, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings. The two added 40 runs in five overs. Jaiswal failed for the second consecutive match. Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad then took charge, adding 195 runs for the third wicket. Virat Kohli scored his 53rd ODI century, while Ruturaj Gaikwad scored his first century in this format. Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for 105 runs off 83 balls, including two sixes and 12 fours, while Kohli scored 102 runs off 93 balls, including two sixes and seven fours.
After the dismissal of both, KL Rahul, along with Ravindra Jadeja, took the team past 350 in the final overs. Rahul completed his second consecutive half-century. At one point, India looked set to reach 380, but Washington Sundar's 1-run knock, which came off just 8 balls, limited India to 358. Jadeja scored 24 runs off 27 balls and failed to deliver the aggressive batting required in the final overs. Marco Jansen took two wickets for South Africa, while Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger each took one wicket.
Chasing a target of 359, South Africa suffered an early blow when Arshdeep Singh dismissed Quinton de Kock for 8 in the fifth over. Aiden Markram, along with captain Temba Bavuma, steadied the innings. The two shared a 101-run partnership. Bavuma missed out on a half-century, being dismissed for 46 off 48 balls. Markram then completed his century in partnership with Matthew Brietzke. Markram was dismissed for 110 at the score of 197.
