Looking for a place where the beauty of nature, the fragrance of history, and the fun of adventure are found together? Then, Paros Island in Greece can be a dream place for you. Part of the Cyclades island group located in the Aegean Sea, this island is spread over about 196 square kilometers. It is counted among the best places for windsurfing in Europe, and the atmosphere here is such that every street, every shore, and every gust of wind carries a story with it.

Old villages, new splendor

Paros consists of two central towns - Naoussa and Parikia. Formerly, Naoussa used to be a peaceful village of fishermen, where locals made their living from the sea, but with the passing years, this site became a beautiful seaside town. Presently, the narrow alleys lined with white cottages, tiny houses adorned with flowers of various colors, pretty boutiques, and cafes by the seaside amaze every guest.

Parikia is the island's capital and principal port. Here, you can experience traditional Greek architecture, the bustle of the bazaar, and the sparkling nightlife in the evenings. Exploring the old cobblestone streets and viewing the blue-domed churches close up is an experience by itself.

Journey into the world of marble

Parosti Parian marble is renowned globally. Marble obtained from here was so bright and pure in ancient times that it was used to construct most of the ancient statues and buildings of Greece. For instance, world-renowned statues, the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Venus de Milo, are sculpted out of this marble.

The period of quarrying marble from the quarries here started in the 6th century BC, and it was the pride of Greek architecture for centuries. Even now, remnants of these ancient quarries are seen in the center of the island, which bear witness to the past.

Church is still mysterious

The Panagia Ekatontapiliani Church, located in Parikia, which is called the 'Church of Hundred Doors', was built in the fourth century. It is believed that it was built by Saint Helena. It has an interesting story - it has 99 doors, and it is said that the 100th door will open only when Greece takes Istanbul back under its control. This church is still counted among the holiest places of Christianity.

Great place for water activities

Paros sea is renowned for all types of water sports. The most visited beach here is Golden Beach or Chrissi Akti, where the International Windsurfing Championship is hosted annually. Other than this, the air and clear blue water here are ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Kolymbithres beach is famous for its unique rocky appearance and crystal clear water. Meanwhile, beaches such as Santa Maria, Logrus, and Parparos are extremely popular among lovers of scuba diving, snorkeling, and sailing.

If you ever intend to visit Greece, then for sure add Paros Island to your travel schedule. Each moment here will make you feel that you are indeed wandering in a postcard world.
