IGI Airport gets fourth runway, Aviation Minister inaugurates Elevated Taxiways

The country's largest airport Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has further expanded today. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today inaugurated the much-awaited dual elevated Eastern Cross Taxiways' fourth runway at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is currently the largest airport in the country and handles over 1,500 aircraft movements every day.
The Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT) is 2.1 kilometers long and will be really useful in reducing the time passengers spend on the tarmac after landing and before the take-off of flights. This will also help in reducing the waiting time of passengers waiting to deboard the aircraft.
With the ECT, IGI Airport will be the only airport in the country to have an elevated taxiway with roads passing beneath it.
The ECT will connect the northern and southern airfields on the eastern side of the airport and reduce the taxiing distance for aircraft by seven kilometers. It can handle the A-380 and wide-body aircraft including the B-777 and B-747. Now the airport will have four runways - RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28 and RW 11L/29R.
According to earlier reports, these taxiways in Delhi will help reduce annual carbon emissions by 55,000 tonnes, which is in line with India's goal of achieving a 'net zero carbon emission airport' by 2030.
