Dibyendu Bhattacharya talks about his character in Amazon Prime's Main Monica

Dibyendu Bhattacharya, known for his roles in films like Black Friday and Dev.D and OTT projects like Sacred Games and Criminal Justice, is now earning praise for his role in Amazon Prime Video's latest series, Main Monica. Dibyendu plays the role of Mangu Shetty, aka Mangu Anna, a Mangalorean Udupi Shetty Anna and Dance Bar owner. The show is about the enigmatic beauty, Monica, who everyone in the town is after.

Dibyendu talks about his experience of making Main Monica, saying that the writers, Ranjeet Chitrakar, Amber Wasi, and Paromita Ganguly, who are also the producers, have taken creative and production decisions in harmony. He had known them since 2018, when they were conceptualizing the project and narrated the character of Mangu Anna to him.

Mangu Anna's dance bar is not doing well, and he meets Monica, who brings prosperity to his business. Mangu has a past where he was once a dreaded gangster but has now mellowed down and settled to run the dance bar and live life peacefully. He has immense respect for Monica and associates her with Goddess Laxmi who has brought prosperity to his business. The feeling he has for Monica is of love, respect, and awe, and this is justified with his one-liner "acche ghar ki hai woh".

Dibyendu prepared for the role by learning the Tullu or Mangalorean language and catching the essence of it. He had many sit-down discussions with the producers about the character's small habits, past history, and other details that helped him instill realism in the character.

Sharing a memorable incident from the set, Dibyendu remembers a transgender person who complimented him while he was dressed as Mangu Anna, waiting for the shoot to start. The person said, "Anna bahot acche lag rahe ho, bahot jach rahe ho. Aap bahot tarakki karoge," which touched his heart and is an incident that he will always remember.

In conclusion, Dibyendu Bhattacharya is happy that people are appreciating his character in Main Monica, a unique title inspired by R.D Burman's popular song "Monica Oh My Darling." The show's writers, who are also the producers, have taken creative and production decisions in harmony, and Dibyendu's performance as Mangu Anna has earned him praise.
