People are moving from India to other countries like the US. The current US government, headed by President Donald Trump has come up with new policies regarding Green Cards. In the past, one had to remain in the US under a temporary visa until they acquired the Green Card, but that can no longer happen.

In the past, someone could apply for a Green Card while they were in the US through what was known as Adjustment of Status but this has changed since the USCIS does not allow it anymore. One now has to return to their country of origin and apply for the Green Card at an embassy or consular post in the US. This process has become more complicated than before.

According to media reports, Ajay Bhutoria, an immigration advocate in the US, told PTI that the new green card policy is a setback for Indians. He said, "More than 1.2 million law-abiding Indian-Americans are now facing difficulties. Under the new US rule, green card applicants are required to leave the US and re-enter on an immigrant visa."

He said, "The number of students coming to the US for studies has decreased by 35 to 40 percent in the last two years. Those who went to India for visa stamping since last December are still stuck. The dates they have received are until August or October."
