Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud-based platform used by major companies worldwide and is said to be the backbone of the internet. Servers for major websites and mobile apps run on it. If something goes wrong with its system, the internet can go down worldwide. A similar situation was witnessed last Monday. A technical glitch at AWS disrupted thousands of websites, affecting millions of users.

Due to the AWS outage, major platforms like Snapchat, Reddit, Canva, Roblox, Fortnite, Lloyds Bank, and Halifax were down for hours. When users opened their apps, they were met with a DNS (Domain Name System) error message. The impact of this outage was felt globally.

On Monday, an AWS data center in Northern Virginia experienced a technical glitch, resulting in a DNS error. DNS is the Internet's navigation system, which determines the location of a website or server. This technical glitch affected DNS, preventing users from accessing apps and websites. AWS stated that the issue was not related to a cyberattack.

Technology experts believe this is a lesson for tech companies worldwide. It's risky for companies to store all their data and services in one place. As we mentioned earlier, most companies' data and servers are located on AWS. This outage affected millions of people.

AWS is one of the largest companies in server management. It competes directly with Microsoft's Azure and Google Cloud. However, smaller companies like IBM, Alibaba Cloud, and Stackit are smaller.

Many large Indian companies and government agencies use AWS for their online services. This outage has made it imperative for a country like India to strengthen its cloud infrastructure. India has been working on data localization for quite some time under the Digital India and Make in India initiatives. Therefore, relying on foreign servers can be risky.
