There were 2.87 lakh maternal deaths worldwide in 2020, which is only 7% less than 3.09 lakh in 2016. In 2020, 24 thousand of women died in India. This is the second-largest figure in the world. In 2020, the highest number of 82 thousand deaths occurred in Nigeria. The good thing is that between 2000 and 2020, pregnancy-related deaths in India also decreased by 73.5%.

According to the report, about 70 percent of deaths in 2020 occurred in sub-Saharan Africa, where the rate is 136 times higher than in Australia and New Zealand. In Afghanistan, people in the Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen are facing severe humanitarian crises.
