The Trump administration is considering lifting a ban on selling Nvidia Corp.'s H200 artificial intelligence chip to China, according to people familiar with the matter. The easing of tensions between the nations in recent months has opened up the likelihood of exports of high-end U.S. technology, sources said. A policy prohibiting the sale of high-end chips is presently under review by the US Commerce Department. But it is not certain that the policy will be altered.
The White House did not address the matter directly, but said that the US remained committed to keeping its technological edge and ensuring national security. Neither the Department of Commerce nor Nvidia issued public comments related to the action.
Nvidia says that current regulations prevent it from selling competitive AI data center chips in China, and this is leaving a significant market in the hands of foreign companies. This decision comes after US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached a tentative agreement on trade and technology disputes in Busan last month.
