New AirPods May Use Cameras for Object Recognition Instead of Photography
Apple is reportedly working on AirPods with a camera. They could launch in September of this year. Let's find out what this camera will do and why it's special.

Apple is expected to launch its camera-equipped AirPods soon. According to Mark Gurman's report on Bloomberg, Apple's testing team is currently actively using prototypes at the Design Validation Test (DVT) phase, which comes before the Production Validation Test (PVT) phase.
Gurman explains that the AirPods' cameras do not serve any purpose related to capturing images or recording video. Instead, they will be used to capture low-resolution images of objects around the wearer's face. You can then ask Siri questions regarding the objects. For instance, you might want to know what you should prepare with the ingredients you have.
These new AirPods will look very similar to the AirPods Pro 3, but their stems will be slightly longer due to the camera technology. They will also feature a small LED light that will indicate when visual data is being sent to the cloud. Apple originally intended to launch these new AirPods in the first half of 2026, but a delay in the Siri upgrade caused the delay. Gurman says that the improved Siri is now ready to arrive in September, so it's expected that these new AirPods will also launch around that time. It's worth noting that the AirPods Pro 3 were released in September 2025.
