The demolition of the 600-year-old chhatri of ruler Rao Surajmal in a village in Kota, Rajasthan, has sparked outrage. The Kota administration has suspended three officers after learning that the monument's chhatri in the village will be demolished for the proposed airport. This order was issued Sunday.
According to PTI report, a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter and submit the report. Angry with this vandalism, the Bundi royal family and local people have called for a protest on Monday. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, while talking to X about the incident, said, 'The demolition of the chhatri of Bundi Naresh Rao Surajmal Hada is a sad and disturbing incident. Did the KDA do this act despite knowing the historical importance of the chhatri? Investigation and appropriate action is necessary in this regard.'
The minister said, 'It is the moral responsibility of the system operators to keep public sentiment supreme.' Let us tell you that this memorial, built in honor of Rao Surajmal, the 9th ruler of the erstwhile Bundi princely state, is located in Tulsi village of the neighboring Bundi district. On Saturday, the Kota Development Authority (KDA) demolished it. Meanwhile, Bundi MLA Harimohan Sharma, Vanshvardhan Singh of the Bundi royal family, and members of Karni Sena and Rajput community visited the demolition site on Sunday and condemned the action of KDA.
Ravindra Goswami, Kota Collector and KDA Chairman spoke with him over the phone. He stated that instead of the existing 16 biswa land (21,600 square feet), one bigha (27,000 square feet) of land along the national highway in Ballop panchayat of Bundi district has been allotted for the statue's reconstruction.
However, representatives of the Rajput community and local villagers objected to the arrangement, demanding that the proposed airport be named after Rao Surajmal and that a statue of him be installed at its entrance.
