Personal Context Agent Makes ChatGPT More Memory-Powered and Reliable
ChatGPT Personal Context Tool: ChatGPT has received a major update. Until now, it stored your old chats, but extracting accurate information from them was often difficult. With the new feature, ChatGPT Plus and Pro users can now easily search your entire chat history. Learn how.
OpenAI has introduced a significant and crucial feature for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. ChatGPT is now able to search the whole conversation history. The new technology, also referred to as the Personal Context Agent tool, enables the user to ask any question regarding all conversations since the account creation date until the current date and get the correct answers. Interestingly, the new ChatGPT is able to provide the sources it has gathered from previous conversations in clickable form.
ChatGPT was storing all of your past conversations up until now, but it was difficult to get the correct details from those conversations. ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro can now search their past conversations even if they are a year old.
The technical name of this new feature is the Personal Context Agent Tool (codename: q7dr546). This tool is activated for history-based queries and helps ChatGPT understand what topics a user has previously discussed. For example, old recipes, a previously created workout plan, a discussion about a project or idea. Now, there's no need to open separate chats to find these things; they'll all be in one place.
When ChatGPT uses information from an old chat, it will display a source link below the reply. You can click on the link to go directly to the old conversation from which the reference was taken. This will also increase the reliability of the information.

Previously, the chat history search feature often displayed incorrect or irrelevant chats. Multiple similar threads could cause confusion and difficulty finding the correct information. The new system largely addresses these shortcomings.
Currently, this feature is only available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. It is being rolled out globally and will cover all chats from the time the account was created. While this feature is a major upgrade for ChatGPT, Google's Gemini already provided the ability to reference older conversations in February 2025.
Gemini users have been experiencing more context-aware chats for quite some time. Despite this, OpenAI has recently made significant improvements, including the rollout of GPT-5, the release of ChatGPT-5.1, new personalities, a more natural tone, and faster replies.
