Coast Guard seizes ship carrying 6000 kg of narcotics; Drugs worth crores, six people arrested
ICG: We have arrested six Myanmar nationals from a fishing trawler, said a defense official. It is believed that the methamphetamine was meant for India and its neighboring countries. We have informed the Andaman and Nicobar Police for joint interrogation.
The Indian Coast Guard has seized a huge consignment of about five tonnes of drugs from a fishing boat in the Andaman waters. According to defense officials, this could be the largest drug consignment ever caught by the Indian Coast Guard. More details are awaited.
In one of the biggest anti-narcotics operations, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has seized a ship carrying six Myanmarese crew with 6,000 kg of banned methamphetamine near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an official said here Monday. The drugs had been packed in about 3,000 packets of 2 kg each. The drugs were estimated at several crores of rupees in the international market.
During a routine patrol, the pilot of the Coast Guard Dornier aircraft on November 23 noticed suspicious activity of a fishing trawler near Baron Island, about 150 Km from Port Blair," the Defence official said. The trawler was warned and asked to reduce speed. Meanwhile, the pilot alerted the Andaman and Nicobar Command. Immediately our fast patrol ships headed towards Baron Island. The fishing trawler was then taken to Port Blair on November 24 for further investigation.
The defense official said that we have arrested six Myanmar citizens from the fishing trawler. It is believed that the methamphetamine was meant for India and its neighboring countries. We have informed the Andaman and Nicobar Police for joint interrogation. This is not the first time that such banned goods have been seized in Indian waters in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Similar drugs were also seized in 2019 and 2022 from foreign ships when they were trying to enter Indian waters.
