CNG prices were increased by Rs 2 per kg in many cities of the country including Mumbai, but consumers in the election state Delhi have been exempted from this for now. Indraprastha Gas Limited, the company that supplies CNG and piped natural gas to homes for cooking in the national capital and surrounding cities, has increased the price of CNG by Rs 2 per kg over the weekend.

While CNG prices were raised in cities like Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, among others, Delhi has been spared this hike, ahead of elections that are due in a couple of months. With the poll season getting over, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) which retails gas in Mumbai has hiked the price of CNG in Mumbai and its adjoining areas by Rs 2 per kg as per its website.

The other city gas retailers, MGL and Adani Total Gas Limited have not changed the retail prices during the last two months despite a 20 percent increase in the cost of raw materials. No sooner than the assembly elections in Mumbai got over, MGL increased the price of CNG by Rs 2 per kg to Rs 77 with effect from November 23. The other CNG retailers in the city have also hiked prices.

According to the IGL website, CNG rates in Delhi remained unchanged at Rs 75.09 per kg, while prices in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad have increased by Rs 2 per kg to Rs 81.70 and in Gurugram to Rs 82.12 per kg. It was implemented on November 23.

CNG prices vary from state to state because of the incidence of local taxes in the form of VAT. When UP was about to go to polls in 2022, IGL had revised prices in Delhi but did not touch rates for UP cities.

Industry sources said CNG prices in Delhi would likely be revised after the assembly elections sometime in January or February. AGL and IGL did not disclose the reasons on grounds of which the price was hiked, but sources said the increase was justified since firms were now having to buy gas at a higher price after two successive rounds of cuts in the supply of regulated or APM gas.
