Among the total 56.04 crore accounts of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), 23 percent have turned inactive. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary presented this information in the Lok Sabha on Monday. According to him, by the date of 31 July 2025, 13.04 crore PMJDY accounts will be turned inactive.
Here, Uttar Pradesh has the largest number of 2.75 crore Jan Dhan accounts dormant, followed by Bihar with 1.39 crores and 1.07 crores in Madhya Pradesh.
According to the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) dated February 18, 2009, if there is no transaction in a savings account for more than two years, it is considered inactive.
The government has initiated various steps, such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), to facilitate the easy functioning of PMJDY accounts. These benefits are also carried forward to inactive accounts. Chaudhary said that recently, a campaign has been started at the Gram Panchayat level across the country from July 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025. Here, re-KYC of 'inactive PMJDY accounts' is among the key operations of the campaign.
The minister said that banks inform the account holders in writing about the accounts that become inactive through letter, email or SMS, and also contact the holders of inactive accounts on a quarterly basis through letter, email or SMS.
He further said that at present, there is no proposal to impose transaction charges on UPI. To ensure continuity of UPI services by ecosystem partners, the Government had implemented the incentive scheme during the last four years i.e. from FY 2021-22 to FY 2024-25. During this period, the Government has extended incentive support of about Rs 8,730 crore.
