UIDAI Launches New Aadhaar App With QR-Based Identity Sharing
According to UIDAI, the mAadhaar app usage will be discontinued soon, as per reports issued on Friday. In its communication, UIDAI requested users to shift to the new Aadhaar app, which is already available for download from the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android. With the help of this app, one can store, modify, and share their Aadhaar details. It provides QR-based sharing, facial recognition authentication, biometric lock management, and selective data sharing.
UIDAI in an X post mentioned that the mAadhaar app would be retired soon. In addition, it stated that the newly launched Aadhaar app will offer smart, fast, and safe access to the digital platform. It supports 13 Indian languages.
According to UIDAI, the key feature of the new Aadhaar app is QR-based Aadhaar sharing and offline identity verification. The "Selective Share" feature allows users to verify their identity without revealing their Aadhaar number. They can choose how much information they want to share, such as photo, name, age, gender, mobile number, address, or Aadhaar status.

The app also generates a QR code that can be scanned at authorized terminals for identification. UIDAI says that through the app, users can directly update their Aadhaar-linked mobile number and address. They can also add a maximum of five family members to their account by going to the profile section.
Biometric locking controls are also provided. This can be used to lock fingerprint, face, and iris authentication data to prevent misuse. This lock can also be removed through the app if necessary. However, UIDAI has also stated that if the linked phone number or smartphone is lost, users may be temporarily disabled from Aadhaar-related services.
UIDAI has not yet clarified whether data from the old mAadhaar app will be automatically transferred to the new app. Therefore, existing users will have to manually set up their profile again after downloading the new app.
How to download and register the new Aadhaar app?
The new Aadhaar app is available for Android and iOS on the Google Play Store and App Store respectively.
Open the Aadhaar app and select your preferred language.
Register for the app. You can use your Aadhaar-linked mobile number or a different number. Additional authentication will be required for other numbers.
Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and complete SMS verification via OTP.
Next, you'll be asked to perform face authentication. Ensure the background is well-lit and remove glasses if you wear them.
Now, set a six-digit password that will be used to access the app.
You'll be redirected to the app's home page, where you can view your Aadhaar card, share it with others, and set a biometric lock.
