Dr. Shalini Sharma’s Rajasthani Khadi Lehenga Selected for Cannes Film Festival, But Geopolitical Issues Prevent Showcase
Jodhpur-based designer Dr. Shalini Sharma’s Khadi bridal lehenga was selected for Cannes Film Festival 2025. Despite geopolitical issues preventing her attendance, her design won global acclaim for Indian craftsmanship.

Jodhpur-based fashion designer Dr. Shalini Rajendra Sharma made history when her traditional Rajasthani bridal lehenga, crafted using Khadi and detailed hand embroidery, was selected for display at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025. This remarkable achievement marked the first time a female fashion designer from Rajasthan had her creation chosen for the world-renowned event held at Palais des Festivals, France.
Dr. Sharma’s lehenga, designed with 5D peacock embroidery, featured real pearls, rubies, silver ghungroos, and intricate threadwork, all handcrafted over Khadi tissue. The ensemble, inspired by India’s national bird and royal wedding aesthetics, was selected by the Europe-Asia Fashion Alliance (EAFA), an official Cannes fashion body. Notably, Cannes typically requires red carpet garments to follow a western gown format. However, the selection panel was so impressed with the originality and beauty of Sharma’s design that they made an exception—permitting the lehenga with minor gown adaptations, without altering its core identity.
Despite this recognition, Dr. Sharma was unable to attend the event, which took place from May 13 to May 24, due to unforeseen challenges. Escalating tensions between India and Pakistan during that period led to flight cancellations from Jodhpur, resulting in significant logistical hurdles. These complications made it impossible for Sharma and her design to reach Cannes in time for the event.
