Recommends separate budget for cyber-security in aviation: Parliamentary committee submits report

A parliamentary committee has asked the Civil Aviation Ministry to put in place a robust mechanism to counter cyber attacks in the aviation sector. The committee presented its report in Parliament on March 13, making several recommendations, including a separate budget for cyber security in the aviation sector.
The committee is of the view that the aviation sector is more vulnerable to cyber security threats. Cyber attacks on airlines have increased in the last few years. This puts air operations and passengers' private information at risk. Recently, a possible cyber attack in the United States brought down airlines' websites, leading to the grounding of several flights.
The Committee welcomes the move of the Ministry to seek reports from airports/aircraft operators on cyber security in the aviation sector. The Committee has recommended the Ministry prepare a summary of the reports received from the airports/aircraft operators.
The parliamentary committee said that in the last five years, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has registered 13 incidents of cyber attacks. AAI has used Rs 51.80 crore for cyber security between the years 2019-2022. At the same time, the ministry is facing challenges like data security, and a lack of skilled workers. To deal with these, a separate budget can be brought for cyber-security in the aviation sector.
