Pakistan's cricket stars are set to get a massive boost with the introduction of new central contracts. Talks are on regarding their participation in overseas T20 leagues, but despite this, top players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi can earn Rs 13 lakh, which is four times more than last year's contract.
The new contracts eliminate the division between red and white ball players and divide them into four different categories. Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi will be in Category A as captain and cross-format star. Category B players are in line to get around 3 million PKR, while Category C and D will get between million PKR.
This comes just ahead of the ICC's new revenue distribution model coming into force next year, with the PCB's annual earnings expected to top ₹9.6 billion, more than double the previous ICC rights cycle. This hike is a game-changer for players who are among the lowest-paid internationally. His limited participation in foreign T20 leagues due to restrictive policies has further increased his earnings.
Negotiations are still underway on how many leagues Pakistani players will be allowed to participate in next year. Players in the top two categories will be allowed one league outside the PSL, and players in the lower categories will potentially be allowed to participate in multiple leagues.
The PCB acknowledges the importance of these leagues, believing that players who do not attend are missing out on life-changing earnings. Senior players in the league can earn two to three times more than their current income.
