IPL 2024: Delhi Capitals got a big blow, captain Rishabh Pant suspended for one match, heavy fine also imposed

Delhi Capitals has suffered a big setback in IPL-2024. Team captain Rishabh Pant has been suspended for one match. He has also been fined Rs 30 lakh for slow over-rate.

On May 7, Delhi defeated Rajasthan Royals by 20 runs at their home stadium, Arun Jaitley Stadium. During this game, Pant was found to have a slow over rate. To bowl the entire 20 overs, Delhi took ten minutes longer than expected.

Delhi has been affected by slow overrate on previous occasions. Delhi has done this three times, and since it's the third time, Pant has been suspended; if not, he would have only received a fine. The team members have been fined in addition to Pant, who has received a large penalty. All the players of the team who were part of the playing 11 have been fined Rs 12 lakh or 50 percent of the match fee, whichever is less. This also includes impact players.

To save Pant and the team, Delhi Capitals had appealed against this decision of the referee. But it was of no use. Delhi's appeal was also sent to the BCCI Ombudsman. The Ombudsman held a hearing and then said that the match referee's decision was final. The Delhi team is in the race for the playoffs and will have to win both its matches to go to the next round, but Pant's absence in the next match is very bad news for this team. Delhi team is currently in fifth position in the points table.
