Climate Emergency in Europe: Heatwave Pushes Switzerland's Glacier Loss Day to Earliest Date on Record
Due to the intense heat and climate crisis in Europe, Swiss glaciers are rapidly melting, leading to the possibility of 'Glacier Loss Day' arriving early this year.

Heatwaves continue to be a concern in Europe. People from France to Switzerland are suffering from the heat. This heatwave indicates a climate emergency.
According to the predictions in Switzerland, many glaciers will lose a considerable amount of ice due to heatwaves this year. Heatwaves in Europe are accelerating the process of melting of ice. Switzerland will witness its "Glacier Loss Day" by Monday.
Glacier Loss Day marks the point when all the ice accumulated during winter time is gone. Everything after that date between May to October, when ice melts, adds more to glacier ice loss and makes glaciers shrink. This is going to happen in Switzerland as well.
"We're seeing ice melting across the Alps. We're three months ahead of normal," Matthias Huss, head of Glacier Monitoring (GLAMOS) in Switzerland, told AFP on Friday.
