We all know air pollution remains an ever-increasing problem every year in the Delhi-NCR region. However, a recent report has revealed a worrying trend. The survey by Park+ Research Labs includes responses from 5,200 car owners across the region, and shows that 63 percent of the respondents are not aware of the status of their Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. Which is a mandatory document under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Added to this worrying figure, 11 percent of car owners did not even know what a PUC certificate is or where to renew it. While 27 percent admitted indifference when asked about the role of non-PUC-certified vehicles in increasing pollution levels.

This lack of awareness is particularly worrisome in a region where vehicular emissions contribute 40 percent of PM 2.5 levels and 81 percent of nitrogen oxides (NOx), according to a study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

For vehicle owners in Delhi, the consequences of ignoring PUC certification are more dangerous than environmental damage. There is a provision for a fine of Rs 10,000. Wherein, challans can be processed directly through courts, and information about violations will also be sent through mobile phones.

But the problem is not a fine, it's accountability. Every year, particularly during winters, AQI in Delhi NCR often crosses to dangerous levels. In that situation, the role of individual car owners is crucial to reduce pollution more than ever.

Three crore people are reeling under winter smog and its health-related side effects in Delhi NCR. Therefore, it is all the more important that the vehicle owners do not turn their back on their responsibility. Regular maintenance and compliance with PUC norms are small but effective steps, which collectively make a big difference.
