Hearing in Supreme Court on electoral bond case today, contempt petition filed against SBI

The electoral bond case is to be heard in the Supreme Court today. The Supreme Court will hear the petition of the State Bank of India on Monday, in which SBI Bank has sought to extend the deadline for sharing information related to electoral bonds till June 30. Apart from this, the Supreme Court will also hear today the petition of NGO ADR, in which a contempt petition has been filed against SBI.

According to ADR's petition, SBI intentionally disregarded the Supreme Court's ruling. The Election Commission was directed by the Supreme Court to receive information regarding electoral bonds from SBI by March 6 and to make that information available to the public by March 13. These petitions will be heard by a five-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. The bench consists of Justices Sanjeev Khanna, BR Gavai, JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Mishra in addition to Justice DY Chandrachud.

A five-judge Constitution bench declared the Center's Electoral Bonds programme unconstitutional on February 15 and banned it. The sole financial institution involved in the Electoral Bond Scheme, SBI Bank, was mandated by the court to furnish comprehensive details regarding the acquisition of electoral bonds starting on April 12, 2019, till now, by March 6.
