Harbhajan Singh Explains Why Shubman Gill Missed T20 World Cup Squad
Harbhajan Singh on Shubman Gill: Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh expressed disappointment over Shubman Gill's exclusion from the 2026 T20 World Cup. He stated that Gill was excluded solely due to team combination considerations. He will soon return to India's T20 team.
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has supported the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, saying that the star opener appears ready for greater challenges. He also stated that despite being omitted from the T20 World Cup squad, he will soon receive more opportunities in the T20 International format as the team's vice-captain. Bhajji also explained the reason for Gill's exclusion from the T20 World Cup.
Shubman Gill is now preparing for the home ODI series against New Zealand, which starts on January 11th. So far, he hasn't been able to make a significant impact in ODIs, both as a batsman and as a leader. Gill also failed to live up to expectations in T20Is after returning as vice-captain during the Asia Cup. In his last 15 innings, he could score a meager 291 runs in T20Is, with not a single half-century. This led to his exclusion from the T20 World Cup team.
Regarding Gill's return to ODIs after his injury and his omission from the T20 World Cup squad, Harbhajan Singh said that Gill's return to ODIs was inevitable. There was no doubt about it. He said, "I think Shubman Gill was left out because of the combination Team India wanted in the T20 format. Otherwise, I never had any doubt that he wouldn't be in the ODI or Test squad."

Bhajji said that the T20 team is really good. He said, "I had said that Ajit deserves a 10 out of 10 for the team." Although I felt a little bad for Shubman, he will soon get more opportunities. All the players are match-winners in their own right. Hopefully, we can win consecutive World Cups because we have that kind of team.
Harbhajan also praised India's match-winning spin trio of Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav, selected for the T20 World Cup. He said that spin is good for India. Kuldeep, Varun, and Axar are all spinners and can win matches in a single spell. Players still don't understand Varun. Kuldeep has that variation. This is a good combination of spinners. Hopefully, they will stay injury-free and serve India for a long time.
