Gmail Users Panic Over Viral Post; Google Confirms ‘No AI Training on Emails’

A recent viral post on social media sent Gmail users into a panic. It claimed that Google had quietly "opted in" all users to the Gemini AI model and that their personal emails and attachments were now being used for AI training. It went further to note that this feature can only be disabled by turning off two different options within the settings of Gmail.

Moreover, different reports, like one from Malwarebytes, indicated that for some users, Smart Features settings were enabled in Gmail by default. Further, these are the very tools that train AI models. These reports have raised a lot of debate on social media, questioning the privacy of millions of users.

On November 22nd, Google issued a detailed statement from Gmail's official X (formerly Twitter) handle, dismissing all these claims. The company stated that Gmail Smart Features have been around for a long time and have not been recently changed.

Google categorically stated that the company does not use Gmail content to train Gemini AI or any AI model. Google stated, "No changes have been made to user settings. If any policy changes occur in the future, we will communicate them with complete transparency."

This statement from Google made it clear that the claims made in the viral posts and reports were misleading and baseless.

Even after Google's clarification, reactions on social media were divided. Some users supported the company, while others argued that the entire matter was the result of misunderstandings and rumors. He stated that Google has long maintained strict policies regarding email privacy.

On the other hand, many users questioned Google's statement. Some said that a single post doesn't prove anything, while others called it an attempt to circumvent European Union privacy laws. Some openly expressed distrust in Google, stating that they would not accept this clarification without evidence.

While the viral claims of Gemini AI accessing Gmail data proved frightening, Google's official statement clarified that users' emails are completely secure and are not used for AI training. Despite this, the ongoing debate on social media demonstrates that users are still extremely sensitive about their digital privacy, and any such rumor can have an immediate impact.
