Even Experts Aren’t Safe: Cyber Fraudsters Outwit Police, Professionals
Scams, How to Be Safe From Online Scams: Online scammers use tactics to defraud people that only become apparent after they've fallen for them. Let's find out how scammers use psychological techniques to manipulate your mind.

The scope of cyber fraud in India is steadily growing. Data from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) shows that thousands of people became victims of scams in the first four months of 2024 alone. From fake trading platforms and loan apps to dating and gaming apps, fraudsters siphoned billions of rupees from individuals.
People often believe they will never fall for scams. However, the reality is that even cyber experts and police officers have fallen prey to these schemes. In fact, criminals deeply understand human psychology and leverage it to manipulate minds.
These scammers use methods similar to those employed in advertising, politics, and marketing. Romance scams frequently lure victims with promises of love, while investment scams attract with promises of quick profits. Scammers also entice individuals with promises of jobs, social status, or charity—things people always seek.
To gain trust, scammers often impersonate officials from agencies like the CBI, RBI, ED, or other prominent institutions. They may also cite fake NGOs or disaster relief efforts. Sometimes, they exploit emotions in payment fraud and romance scams, leaving victims confused.
Another common tactic used by scammers is pressuring victims to make quick decisions. Messages such as "limited-time offer" or "only a few tickets left" push people to act hastily. Additionally, installing VPNs or fake software to take control of devices and operating money mule schemes are among the most dangerous strategies.
Experts advise that before responding to any suspicious offer or call, ask yourself three questions: What is its true purpose? Who will benefit? And do I have the information needed to make an informed decision? If the answers are unclear, it's wise to exercise caution. Emotions, relationships, and trust are scammers' most powerful weapons, and overconfidence can make people easy targets.
