The country's first pod taxi service is going to start soon in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Authority (YEIDA) has approved the revised project and bid for India's first pod taxi. YEIDA has approved the revised project after consultation with the central government agency Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Limited (IPRRC).
According to media reports, now the Yamuna Authority will send its report to the Uttar Pradesh government. After getting approval, work on the pod taxi project will be started. It is expected that this project will be completed by the end of the year 2024.
The estimated cost of this project is Rs 810 crore. Pod Taxi will connect Noida's Jewar Airport to Film City. As per initial estimates, around 37,000 people will be able to travel via pod taxis every day. According to media reports, 8 people can sit and 13 passengers can travel in a pod.
As per the current project, there will be 12 stations for pod taxi service along the 14.6 km route. Film City, Handicraft Park, Sector 29, Sector 32-33, MSME Park, Apparel Park, Toy Park and other places are included in the list of these stations.
Before approving this project, the committee of YEIDA had said that study should be done in the countries where pod taxis are running. Its advantages and disadvantages will be known, and only then proceed further. After that, the study of those countries was done.
According to media reports, pod taxis were launched in 18 countries around the world, but are currently operating in 5 countries. Citing the report of the year 2011-12, the officials associated with the project have told that London's pod taxi service is running in profit, while this project of Abu Dhabi is running in loss.
