Cost of 448 infra projects increased by Rs 5.55 lakh crore, 792 projects are running late

According to a report of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the cost of 448 infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 150 crore in April 2024 increased by a total of Rs 5.55 lakh crore. The ministry monitors infrastructure projects worth Rs 150 crore and above.

According to the report, out of such 1,838 projects, the cost of 448 has increased and 792 projects are running late. The latest report of the ministry states about April 2024, 'The total original cost of implementation of 1,838 projects was Rs 27,64,246.50 crore and now their estimated completion cost is Rs 33,19,601.84 crore. This shows a total increase of Rs 5,55,355.34 crore (20.09 percent of the original cost).'

According to the report, a total of Rs 16,92,997.5 crore has been spent on these projects till April 2024, which is 51 percent of the estimated cost of the projects. However, the report said that if the completion of the projects is calculated as per the latest schedule, then the number of delayed projects can come down to 514.

Of the 792 delayed projects, 220 have a total delay of 1-12 months, 192 have a delay of 13-24 months, 259 have a delay of 25-60 months, and 121 have a delay greater than 60 months. These 792 delayed projects have an average time increase of 35.4 months.

For the past few years, the central government has prioritised infrastructure projects. This is being viewed as an attempt to stimulate the economy. The PM Awas Yojana focuses the government's efforts on building roads and houses.
