Within three years of the creation of this generative AI, 'ChatGPT' has totally revolutionized the way information was hitherto obtained on any subject in the present age of the information revolution. And this chatbot, developed by the American company OpenAI, has become a friend, advisor, and expert to more than 800 million people.

ChatGPT is an OpenAI-developed AI chatbot. It has the ability to understand and respond like a human in many situations. You can ask it questions, which it will answer, help with writing, ask for information, or just have a conversation on any topic.

Now, when people have a question, they would rather turn to ChatGPT than Google Search. Deborah Lee, professor and director of Research Impact and AI Strategy at Mississippi State University, based on a study, stated that this method of finding information has brought about a profound change in the use of technology.

She found that ChatGPT did not replace other tools, but rather continued to provide people with information in a systematic manner while maintaining their relevance. Within a few months of ChatGPT's launch on November 30, 2022, approximately 100 million people were using ChatGPT every week.

This figure increased to 800 million by the end of 2025. Google's traffic declines. A 2025 study by the Pew Research Center found that 34% of Americans are using ChatGPT, double the number in 2023. 58% of young people under the age of 30 are using AI for help. The growing dominance of generative AI has resulted in Google's search engine falling behind.

Google's search engine hasn't been updated much in the past three years, as the company has focused its attention on its AI tool, Gemini. According to a report by SimilarWeb Data, traffic to news websites from Google dropped from 2.3 billion in mid-2024 to 1.7 billion in May 2025.

Traffic for news-related searches increased from 56 percent to 69 percent within a year. The impact on smart speakers and YouTube: Since the launch of ChatGPT, voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home have also lost relevance. According to voice search data for 2025, 34 percent of people over the age of 12 own a smart speaker, compared to 35 percent in 2023.

Conversely, YouTube is the only tool that offers significant competition to ChatGPT. YouTube has 2.74 billion users. 90 percent of American teens report using YouTube. People learn from ChatGPT first and turn to YouTube for additional information and practical solutions.
