Aluminum OS: Google Prepares AI-Powered Desktop Platform to Rival Windows & macOS
Aluminum OS, First Android OS for PC: Google has accelerated its preparations to enter the PC market. The company is working on a new AI-focused operating system, Aluminum OS, designed for traditional computers like laptops and desktops.
Google is once again moving towards entering the traditional PC market. After smartphones, smartwatches, TVs, cars, and XR devices, the company is now examining a new software platform for desktop computers. While for years the capabilities of Android have been expanded to cover several other device categories, until now the PC segment has escaped capture by Google. However, recent signs have started to emerge indicating that this position may soon change.
According to a report by Android Authority, Google recently posted an interesting job listing on LinkedIn, hinting at the company's new mission. According to the post, the company is hiring a senior product manager for the Android, laptop, and tablet segment. According to reports, the company is hiring for its new platform, Aluminum OS. Google describes it as an Android-based and AI-focused operating system.
Google earlier tried to venture into the traditional PC spaces with ChromeOS. But while ChromeOS did find a perfect fit in the education and budget segments, it never came out as a Windows-MacOS alternative. Recently, at the Snapdragon Summit, Google and Qualcomm announced their collaboration on mobile and desktop computing. Aluminum OS is being considered a step towards that end.
Reports suggest that Aluminum OS could bring deep integration with Google's Gemini AI tools. Many premium Android phones currently feature Gemini on-device AI capabilities, but battery and memory limitations prevent them from operating at their full potential. The desktop platform could make AI features even more powerful and faster.

The job listing also states that the selected candidate will develop a roadmap for both ChromeOS and Aluminum OS. This will include various categories such as laptops, detachables, tablets, and mini-PCs. The device lineup is said to include Chromebook, Chromebook Plus, and several Aluminum OS variants, ranging from entry-level to premium segments.
The report indicates that ChromeOS and Aluminum OS will coexist for now. The two systems can complement each other, and it's possible that Google may merge some of their components in the future. If Google moves in this direction, it will establish a new role for Android in the traditional PC market.
