Tata Motors is currently working on a new petrol engine, the main objective of which is to give new performance to Tata's premium cars. This information was given by top officials of the company. Tata Motors is developing a new petrol powertrain, which will be used in its premium sports utility vehicles – Harrier and Safari, the company said.

The models currently come with a 2-litre diesel engine. Speaking with the news agency PTI, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said that the engine is being developed and will be offered in two models going forward. The company has focused only on diesel powertrains, as 80 percent of the market of around 2 lakh units per annum in that segment, where the Harrier and Safari operate, was tilted towards diesel. But now our focus is on petrol engines.

Shailesh Chandra said that we know that the demand for petrol vehicles will increase in the future and we have a 20 percent market share there, which we will increase in the future. So we are working on a 1.5 liter GDI engine.

Tata Motors recently launched the Safari and Harrier facelift in updated avatars. Apart from design updates, there are no significant changes in both Safari and Harrier. Both these SUVs are offered only with 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual stick and an auto gearbox. While the Tata Harrier looks to be a sporty-looking SUV, the Safari is still likely to find favor among people with large families.
