Sri Lanka became the first team to chase more than 300 runs in women's ODI cricket after Chamari Athapaththu missed a double century

The last match of the three-match ODI series played between Sri Lanka and South Africa women's team was played on Wednesday. In this match played at Senwes Cricket Stadium in Potchefstroom, South Africa, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu created history by batting brilliantly.

Athapaththu batted brilliantly in this match but missed her first double-century. He played an unbeaten inning of 195 runs with the help of 26 fours and five sixes in just 139 balls. With this, the Sri Lankan team registered a six-wicket win over South Africa and did what no women's team has been able to do to date. With the help of this record inning of Chamari, Sri Lanka made the most successful run chase in women's ODI history and levelled the three-match ODI series 1-1.

South Africa won this match by batting first and amassing 301 runs for five wickets in 50 overs. With the help of 23 fours and four sixes in 147 balls, team captain Laura Wolwart batted brilliantly to score an unbeaten 184 runs in one inning. After losing four wickets in 44.3 overs, Sri Lanka was able to reach the target in reply.

For the first time in women's ODI cricket history, a target of more than 300 has been accomplished. In women's ODI cricket, Australia previously held the record for the most successful target. In their 2012 match against New Zealand, Australia had reached their goal of 289 runs.

Apart from this, Sri Lanka's score of 305 runs for four wickets while chasing is jointly the highest score in women's cricket. Earlier, during the 2017 World Cup, while chasing the target of 374 runs given by England, South Africa had scored 305 runs for nine wickets.
